Wenn es einen roten Faden gibt, der die magische Existenz von Lady Sovereign auszeichnet, dann ist es der unbändige Wille der knapp 155 cm großen Powerfrau mit der immensen Leidenschaft, dem unglaublichen Talent und unnachgiebigen Biss, ihre Unabhängigkeit zu behaupten und sich keinesfalls kategorisieren zu lassen - Lady Sovereign ist von Natur aus anders.

Im zarten Alter von 13 erkannte die in einer Wohnsiedlung im Norden Londons aufwachsende Künstlerin ihr außergewöhnliches Talent im Umgang mit Worten, mit 15 flog sie wegen Schwänzens von der Schule und bekam die Einschätzung, sie würde ohnehin niemals ihre Mittlere Reife schaffen. Doch dann wurde sie von Jay Z persönlich bei Def Jam unter Vertrag genommen, trat in der David Letterman Show auf, tourte mit Gwen Stefani, nahm mit Pharrell und den Beastie Boys Songs auf und verkaufte mehr als 1 Million Einheiten ihrer Single "Love Me Or Hate Me" - das Leben von Lady Sovereign liest sich wie aus einem Märchenband, hat sie doch unter schwierigsten Voraussetzungen eine traumhafte Karriere gemeistert.

"Ich bin alles andere als eine normale Rapperin. Ich habe immer das Gefühl gehabt, dass ich mich von allen anderen unterscheide, ich habe auch eine ganz andere Herangehensweise als alle anderen. Es passiert, ohne dass ich mich bemühen muss, ich verstehe das selbst nicht."

Vielleicht liegt einer der Gründe in ihrem angeborenen Flow. Oder es liegt an ihrer erstaunlichen, ungewöhnlich kräftigen Stimme. Vielleicht liegt es an ihrem unerschütterlichen Selbstvertrauen. Oder an ihrem angeborenen Gefühl für Beats. An ihrer standhaften Weigerung, Kompromisse einzugehen oder sich in die gut geölte Maschinerie der Musikindustrie einzufügen. Vielleicht ist es aber auch eines jener seltenen Phänomene im Leben, wo ein Künstler sich selbst erfindet, einfach weil er oder sie wie niemand anderes sein kann. Oder es ist einfach so, dass Musik ihr im Blut liegt.

"Ich kann mich erinnern, immer Musik gehört zu haben. Jedes erdenkliche Genre. Meine Mutter war erst ein Punk, dann stand sie auf Rave, dann hörte sie plötzlich nur noch House. Man konnte manchmal gar nicht richtig schlafen vor lauter Musik. Was Musik betrifft, bin ich absolut zwanghaft. Ich muss alles haben. Ich muss jeden Tag einen neuen Song hören."

Also alles andere als eine gewöhnliche Rapperin. Und Erster Klasse nach New York zu fliegen, um Jay Z in seinem Büro hoch über dem Times Square zu treffen, und ein Bild von sich auf einer 20 Meter hohen Anzeigetafel zu sehen, ist auch alles andere als der normale Verlauf im Leben einer 23-jährigen aus einem sozialen Brennpunkt im Londoner Norden.

Und obwohl es ein besonderes Geschenk ist, auf der ganzen Welt hunderttausende von Fans zu haben, von Jay-Z offen bewundert zu werden ("Er nennt mich Mighty Mouse") und mit Gwen Stefani befreundet zu sein ("Mit Gwen auf Tour zu sein war mit das Beste, was ich jemals erlebt habe. Ich hatte solchen Spaß. Sie ist wirklich cool.") kann dieser Status manchmal auch zur Bürde werden.

Seit sie mit 15 Jahren in einen Piratensender marschierte und den Äther eroberte, hat die ewige Rebellin und Außenseiterin stets unmissverständlich klar gemacht, dass sie sich von dem System der Musikindustrie nicht freiwillig versklaven lassen wird, egal mit was für glitzernden Belohnungen man sie locken will.

Was nicht heißt, dass sie es nicht genossen hat, ihre in den USA zum Megahit avancierte Single "Love Me Or Hate Me" zu promoten oder mit ihrem typischen Nordlondoner Akzent, ihrer quirligen Art und ihrem großen Talent vor großem Publikum aufzutreten (etwa 1 Million Fans erlebten sie bei der MTV New Years Eve Party am Times Square), oder für die Veröffentlichung ihrer Single auf einem Kran über dem Times Square aufzutreten, oder was auch immer sie an erstaunlichen Erlebnissen hatte, seit sie den Vertrag bei Def Jam unterzeichnet hat.

"Bei der Veröffentlichung meines Albums haben sie den Times Square abgesperrt. Ich habe meine Mutter dazu einfliegen lassen, sie war sprachlos."

Nach einer Weile jedoch hatten Interviews und Telefonate, Pressekonferenzen und ähnliche Termine den kreativen Prozess des Auftretens und Songschreibens so stark verdrängt, dass Sov, wie sie oft genannt wird, sich weniger wie eine Musikerin fühlte als wie ein Zahnrad im riesigen Getriebe: seelenlos, roboterhaft, und alles andere als amüsiert.

"Es lag an diesen unzähligen Interviews. Manchmal hatte ich in einer Woche knapp Hundert Termine. Zehn Fernsehauftritte am Tag, 20 Phoner rund um den Globus, es war einfach zu viel. Ich hasse es, wenn ich mich wiederhole. Es hat mich fertig gemacht."

Es dauerte nicht lange, da wurde aus dem Zahnrad im Getriebe ein Schraubschlüssel - sie ist eben eine Rebellin.

"Ich begann, mich zu verweigern, wurde krank, schloss mich am Ende eines langen Tages ins Hotelzimmer ein, wollte nicht ausgehen, niemanden sehen. Ich saß nur rum und heulte. Es war einfach schrecklich. Ich hatte eine ganz harte Zeit, dachte sogar an Selbstmord. Ich war einfach nicht bei mir."

Also begab sich Sov, wie so viele erschöpfte Künstler, in professionelle Betreuung. "Ich ging in Behandlung und ließ mich beraten, versuchte, meine Balance wiederzufinden, probierte die verschiedensten Therapien aus. Ich glaube aber nicht, dass ich das wirklich gebraucht hätte. Ich brauchte bloß eine ausgiebige Pause. Und das hat funktioniert, denn jetzt habe ich ein neues Album."

Wie die erschreckend talentierte Dame schon selbst sagt: Sov ist anders als alle anderen. Souverän ist sie, und vertraut voll und ganz auf die Musik in ihrem Blut: sie ist geradeheraus und erfrischend unprätentiös. Ohne Kompromisse, ohne Ausnahmen.

"Wenn man sich dem System anpasst, wird man so wie alle anderen, ein Roboter. Mir tun manche großen Stars fast leid, denn ich weiß, sie tun alles, was man ihnen sagt, ob sie das zugeben oder nicht. So ging es mir selbst ja auch eine Zeit lang."

Ihre kämpferische Art war es, die sie in die Bredouille brachte, aber sie half ihr auch, sich wieder zu bekrabbeln. An dem Punkt angelangt, wo es einfacher gewesen wäre, sich dem Strom hinzugeben, beschloss sie, wieder ihren eigenen Weg einzuschlagen. Nach ihrer intensiven Phase bei Def Jam, die endete, als ihr A&R Team und der CEO Jay Z das Label verließen, dauerte es keine sechs Monate, bis sie wieder im Studio stand und neue Beats und Rhymes kreierte.

"Ich hatte große Selbstzweifel, bis ich endlich im Studio stand. Dann war ich regelrecht erleichtert. Die Musik hat mir den Antrieb gegeben. Das ist das einzige, was ich kann. Ich wollte eben einfach nicht scheitern. Ich wollte meine Fans nicht enttäuschen."

Mit ihrem langjährigen Produzenten Medasyn wieder im Studio zu sein, half ihr, ihren Stil, ihre Stimme und die Kontrolle wieder zu erlangen. Und wenn man schon beschließt, auf eigenen Füßen zu stehen, dann bietet es sich doch nahezu an, ein eigenes Label zu gründen: Midget Records, das eine Partnerschaft mit EMI Music eingegangen ist. Sov trägt alle künstlerischen Entscheidungen selbst, kümmert sich um A & R, Marketing und Promotion, und EMI bietet ihre weltweite Erfahrung und Präsenz. Eine traumhafte Kollaboration, denn Sov sitzt am kreativen Steuer und kann auf der ganzen Welt über die Expertise und das Vertriebsnetz von EMI verfügen.

"Ich fühle mich großartig. Ich habe das Gefühl, meine dunkle Vergangenheit vollständig hinter mir gelassen zu haben. Ich kann mir aussuchen, mit wem ich arbeite. Keiner kann mir etwas verbieten oder mich zu etwas drängen, denn ich bin mein eigener Boss. Das ist großartig. Ich habe mein eigenes Label und alles läuft so, wie ich es will."

Nun, wo sie wieder die volle Kontrolle hat, legt Lady Sovereign ihr neues Album "Jigsaw" vor, und es entspricht all den Erwartungen der Tausenden von Fans auf aller Welt, die die Rapperin für ihren außergewöhnlichen Flow und ihre offenherzige Sensibilität schätzen. "Jigsaw" ist eine musikalische Abrechnung mit den vergangenen zwei Jahren, erzählt mit ungewohnter Offenheit, genre-untypischen Beats und ausdrucksstarken, gepfefferten Lyrics vom Auf und Ab der vergangenen Jahre. Ein markanter Unterschied sollte jedoch noch hervorgehoben werden: Auf diesem Album rappt sie nicht nur gewohnt souverän, sie singt auch.

"Es ist wie mein erstes Album: etwas inkonsistent, aber ich mag es so. Es gibt stilistische Neuerungen, ich bin völlig unberechenbar was die Musik angeht, will mich nicht in eine Genre-Schublade zwängen lassen. Das Album hat ein paar solide Club-Tracks, aber es gibt auch Stücke, die eine neue Seite zeigen, mehr in Richtung ausgefeiltes Songwriting gehen. Das ist ein neues Kapitel in meinem Leben. Einige Stücke erklären, was in den letzten zwei Jahren so passiert ist, denn während dieser Zeit kam ich nicht so recht dazu. Ich habe mir viel Electro- und viel Instrumentalmusik angehört. Die Arbeit mit Medasyn ist sehr inspirierend, uns fallen immer ganz ungewöhnliche Beats ein."

Und über den Titletrack "Jigsaw" sagt Sov: "Ich hatte eine ziemlich intensive Beziehung. Ich war sehr verliebt. Dann brach die Sache auseinander und ich wollte darüber singen. Ich bin zwar nicht die beste Sängerin der Welt, aber ich wollte das Gefühl vermitteln, und das ist mir gelungen. Rappen ist ein Teil von mir. Ich fühle mich anders, wenn ich singe. Ich fühle mich leichter, das ist witzig."

Für Midget Records hat Lady Sovereign aber noch weit größere Ziele gesteckt als das Album "Jigsaw". "Was ich auch gerne machen möchte, ist andere Künstler produzieren. Ich weiß, was gut klingt und ich würde mich auch gern als A & R um andere Künstler kümmern. Ich bin sehr zuversichtlich, dass ich eines Tages ein Musikimperium leiten werde, mit verdammt tollen Künstlern. Ich bin ganz aufgeregt, weil sich mir jetzt alle Möglichkeiten bieten. Ich freue mich richtig darauf."

Sovereign fügt hinzu: "Ich weiß, ich habe so eine gewisse spirituelle Aura, eine Energie, die mich zuversichtlich macht, wo ich weiß, alles wird gut. Als würde jemand mich leiten. Alles ist aus einem bestimmten Grund geschehen und am Ende haben sich die Probleme immer gelöst."

Lady Sovereign sitzt nun also am Steuer, hat ein beeindruckendes neues Album im Gepäck und ihr eigenes Label - scheint so, als sei dieser unbezwingbare Geist mit Pauken und Trompeten zurückgekehrt. Alles ist gut, alles fügt sich. Und dabei hat das neue Kapitel gerade erst begonnen…

Skywriter

Take a few catchy pop hooks, infuse with a disco vibe, a smattering of synthetic/funk tempos and some sweeping, movie melodies, spice it up with a little club music to fill the dancefloor and you've got Data's first out and out sound surfer album. This young French producer, just 23 years old, has mixed styles and influences to produce Skywriter - a modern, digital version of the golden age of groove, pop and dancefloor, lying somewhere between the disco revolution at the late Seventies and the resolutely FM style of the Eighties.

Génération 2010

A fan of hip hop as a teenager, this pure product of the Myspace generation and the Internet buzz got up to speed just three years ago by riding the second "French touch" wave. However, Data offers something else, something that sets him apart from the walk-on starlets who emerged in the wake of the Daft Punk revolution. Like the British singer-songwriter Calvin Harris, his closest musical relative, Guillon injects a healthy dose of disco funk into this futuristic, next-generation pop, reminding us more of Chic's groove, the classiness of Shalamar and the dance-inspired sound of Quincy Jones, than current energetic techno hits with their take-no-prisoners sound.

In this regard, Skywriter, despite its deliberately low key production values compared with the bells-and-whistles wizardry of thirty years ago, has a strong orchestral vein, marrying vocal tones, choral and piano effects, hints of disco bass and funk guitar, keyboard harmonies and touches of rock, which in short is very far from the electro wave that first brought this artist to the recording shores.

This new pop family includes all of major current Anglophone producers, to which Data gives a respectful and modest nod. Whatever you think of the Timbaland/Timberlake tandem, Stuart Price and the Rythmes Digitales or the Outkast duo, this group of talented artists have all succeeded in their own way in reconciling seductive pop melodies, the modernity of the digital era and a few choice stylistic devices from the Seventies and Eighties.

Space soundtracks

However, compared with the American stars who dominate the MTV generation, Data is one of a kind, with a personality all of his own. Skywriter has a dreamy, synthetic quality that's pretty scarce currency in the classic world of pop. Like a lot of other artists of his (young) generation, Data has a veritable fascination for mellow arpeggios, a curiously naive aesthetic and the futuristic utopia of what's been calledspace disco, and the electronic spirals of a select band of musicians like Vangelis, without forgetting the unfettered romanticism of great movie soundtrack composers such as Vladimir Cosma. Lastly, other producers, having succeeded, like Giorgio Moroder and Ryuichi Sakamoto, in combining electro roots with pop charm and orchestral compositions during their careers, have naturally found their way into Guillon's personal pantheon and appear to have had a direct impact on the writing of this album.

Variations pop

Skywriter, with its undeniable movie mojo, should obviously be listened to in one go. Written like any self-respecting pop film, the album alternates opening and closing tracks, moments of stress and ecstasy, dance scenes, moments of charm and end credits. Verdict, Renaissance Theme and Blood Theme, his most filmic tracks, resemble in many ways Moroder's Scarface (Ah, Michelle Pfeiffer in the famous club scene!), Pacino inCarlito's Way or the harmonious jiggery of François de Roubaix and the incredible melodies he composed for Gabin and Ventura.
In terms of pop, the head tones of Sébastien Grainger, formerly a singer with the rock band, Death From Above 1969, feature on two FM- and Eighties-inspired tracks, One In A Million and Rapture, both released as singles. With his velveteen voice and love of black music, French singer Benjamin Diamond is present on two tracks, the tender, funky So much in love (starring another young French artist, Breakbot, on vocodeur) and Skywriter, with its hit qualities, from which the album derives its title. As far as energy goes, Nightmare, a dancefloor peak-time track, suits its name and promises to bring the circulation running back to even the most frigid of legs. The more epic Aerius Light, marries current energetic electro trends with the album's space inspiration, while Morphosis is a mischievous nod at power pop and stage rock. Lastly, slap in the middle of this album, packed into 46 minutes head to toe, is the instrumental Electric Fever, an exercise in pure disco groove.

Skywriter Alive

This highly personal mix of vintage melodies, electro tempos and disco funk devices finds a natural place in the numerous DJ sets that David performs around the world. And now Guillon is bringing his promising Skywriter fusion to the stage. Buzzing with a more club/dancefloor energy, he'll be performing live from June 2009 onwards on a tour that takes in a fistful of European festivals. Staged by the Exyzt team, Data and his magic machines are set to give an explosive performance, backed by screen trickery and powerful light diodes that more than do justice to the most spirited tracks on this debut album.

There's a small list of artists that can sing, rap, write sophisticated pop songs and perform everything with irresistible charisma. The list of female performers that can do all of that is even smaller and Amanda Blank is skyrocketing to the top of that list. Amanda Blank is a woman making listeners take notice of her unique voice, while using various genres and styles as vehicles toward unhindered self-expression.

Philadelphia born and bred, Amanda and her older sisters were raised in a row house in Germantown by artist ex-hippie parents. She quickly learned the value of individuality and the need for outspokenness. A quick glimpse at her interests conveys the dynamic nature of Amanda's character, ranging from the radically raw to the sentimentally sweet. From her tastes in music (My Bloody Valentine, Man Man, Santigold, Antony and the Johnsons) to visual art (Jayson Musson, Aubrey Beardsley) to fashion (Ny Chorm), she gravitates from the sensual and shocking to the fun and absurdist.

Blank is a member of a loose collective of musicians that includes Spank Rock, Santigold, and Diplo. She takes the influences of 90's R&B, 80's dance, indie, new wave and brit pop and weaves them into her own double dutch, defiantly taking the rope out of the hands of haters and then hanging them with it. Whether set against a pastiche of club beats or with her stadium rock group Sweatheart, her voice is undeniably her own.

Amanda took the world by storm with her contribution to the track "Bump" from Spank Rock's 2006 breakout album (and Radiohead favorite) YoYoYoYoYo. Her verse is a serious exercise in lyrical acrobatics as she effortlessly runs circles around the beat. She's just as at home collaborating with Ghostface Killah and M.I.A. as she is with Britney Spears on Eli Escobar and Doug Grayson's remix of the hit single "Gimme More". Her songs have appeared on the HBO series Life Support and Entourage as well as CBS television's CSI:NY. Blank signed to Downtown Records in 2007 and is releasing her debut, I Love You, in July 2009.

There have been many famous B.B.'s. Brigitte Bardot, Burt Bacharach, Boris Becker and of course Bernd Begemann. And now three Berlin DJs/producers continue the tradition with their blog Berlin Battery. What united Shir Khan, Jack Tennis and DJ Supermarkt was a simple thing: the love for the right music, and the idea to bring back "excitement" into high quality dance music & parties.

Formed one year ago mainly to have a platform to share their own dj-mixes, remixes and other useless stuff (like their opinions) with their friends, Berlin Battery has now developed to be one of the top blogs worldwide with visitors form every continent (yes, recently we finally welcomed the first visitors from Africa, the only blank spot on the berlin battery map so far).

The number of people visiting the blog now every day would make lots of "traditional" music magazines really jealous...
Maybe it is because the bbs not only have the inside knowledge of whats new and good (as the few other top blogs have), they are themselves known DJs and producers, travelling the world on decks and collecting all sorts of goodies. So everytime people visit berlin battery they find stuff that you will not find on any other blog. Especially since the day that the two resident guests and friends Malente and Ben Mono joined the club and added their flavour and "unique" productions.

But what became their biggest shot so far was the idea to throw Berlin Battery parties. Starting in Berlins hottest clubs like Scala, Picknick and Villa they invited djs/bands literally from all over the world, who share their ideas and visions of a wild unforgettable party night. Berlin Battery nights are now among the hottest and most wanted in Berlin.

No wonder, because guests so far were:
Breakbot (Paris), Tomboy/Fredski (Copenhagen), Gameboy/Gamegirl, Soft Tigers and Ben/Miami Horror (all Australia), Bunny Rabbit and Larry Tee (New York), DJ Chernobyl (Brasil), Acidkids, Riva Starr, Mr & Mrs Cameron (Amsterdam), Munk (Gomma), Malente&Dex, Hunee and more....

Soon after taking their hometown the three were also booked outside of Berlin to spread their "rave" for music. Berlin Battery parties happened in Copenhagen, Barcelona, Zurich, Leipzig and have been huge successes.

This year Berlin Battery even hosted a complete stage at the great German Festival MELT (which lead to serious explosions as you can see on youtube), they were also invited on stage at the Primavera Festival (Barcelona) and the Festineuch Festival (Switzerland).

Their idea for the parties is quite simple: have a wild party night with all hands in the air by playing only songs they like and support by their whole heart! Works really well (just check on youtube etc...)

The team is often joined by video artist and VJ Ultramoodem, a secret member of the BB's.
