The wind and waves are his friends: Vincent Langer, the 23-year-old professional windsurfer from Schönkirchen, Germany, has been on the scene for more than 10 years. He became interested in windsurfing through his father, who previously worked as a volunteer surfing teacher at Surf Club Kiel. At six years old he was already able to stand on his board unaided. At the age of eight or nine, he spent a short time thinking surfing was a waste of time, and played football instead. But he then rediscovered his passion and only wanted to do one thing: become a professional windsurfer. And he managed it!
His rapid rise to fame
For Vincent there is nothing better than being on the water, be it wave sailing or racing. With the G-SHOCK logo on his sail and a G-SHOCK strapped to his wrist, Vincent has already chalked up a number of successes:
He won his first youth regattas at the age of 11, followed by 4 state youth championship titles and 5 German national championship titles. In 2006, he was called up to be a member of the Olympic squad for the Deutscher Segler-Verband (German Sailing Association) and set a new world speed record.
In 2005, he took a bronze medal at the Junior World Championship. From 2006 to 2008, he served time as a sports soldier in the German army, and was able to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional windsurfer.
After taking the German Vice Champion titles in 2008 and 2009, Vincent Langer became the most successful German windsurfer in the 2010 season, enjoying international renown. He took sixth place in the slalom at the European Championship, third place in the Formula class at the Nordic Championship, as well as fourth place in the wave/freestyle class and third place in slalom and Formula at the German Championship in 2010.
In Vincent Langer's opinion, G-SHOCK watches are the best on the market. Voiceover: "Without G-SHOCK, my starts would only have been half as good!"
Wave sailing
Wave sailing is the pinnacle of windsurfing. It is similar to classic surfing without a sail; the surfer rides the waves with a windsurfing board, using the ascents and the power of the wind to accelerate, flinging himself into the air to perform spectacular jumps.
Racing
Racing is a competition between surfers that takes place on a course set out using buoys, which the surfers have to circle. Whoever crosses the finishing line first wins the race.
Formula
Formula windsurfing is a type of racing where only boards that fulfil criteria set by the International Sailing Federation are permitted to run the race.
Slalom
Slalom is a type of competition where the course runs in a figure of eight and features buoys, which the surfers have to circle.
